So ETH Global Lisbon, 2023 just concluded a few days ago with its Lisbon 🇵🇹 chapter and it seems Ethereum developers just don’t stop shipping
In this recap article, we will take note of all the notable numbers, judges, mentors, speakers & 10 outstanding projects that created magic in Europe!
Every ETHGlobal event stands witness to the emergence of the next big DApp coming to life within the Ethereum ecosystem, by the brightest developers on the planet. So, let’s take a look at what went down this time around…
What is the ETH Global event all about?
Ethereum is at the forefront of onboarding Web3 developers into its ecosystem and welcoming everyone who wants to be a part of the ever-growing blockchain universe. ETH Global on the other hand started with a vision to bring developers together on a platform, very fondly known as “Hackathon” (Hacking + Marathon).
On paper, these might look like some fun stuff for developers to try their hand at building a product, but many of these projects go on to become huge success stories in the grand scheme of things.
As we can see from the numbers above, ETH Global has had a massive impact on the community. The value of insights and industry backing is absolutely priceless if you ask us.
Brief history: The core team of ETH Global is behind the entire madness of these events and it all began with ETHWaterloo in 2017, the World’s largest Ethereum hackathon with over 400 hackers and 32 countries in participation.
Everything that happened at ETH Global Lisbon, 2023 🇵🇹
The event was a huge success and the participation numbers speak for themselves:
650 hackers from over 51 countries, out of which 29% were new to web3.
No of project submissions: 183. If you want to dive deep into all the info about the projects that participated, click here.
There was a total prize pool of $275,000 for projects to take home. These were distributed across different sponsors, verticals, and sample problem statement solving using protocols at various levels for the developers.
A total of 25 hackathon sponsors which included the likes of 1inch, Polygon, MetaMask, Lens Protocol, Optimism, Aave Grants DAO, and UMA amongst others
Each sponsor partner had their own hackathon track to challenge developers to come up with the best use case according to their protocol-level technology. To put things into perspective and detail:
Polygon:
- The prize pool of $5,000 was designated to developers who could build an x-chain hack connecting the Polygon zkEVM with Ethereum or Polygon PoS
- The other $5,000 was designated to developers who could showcase the best use of Polygon ID’s Verifiable Credentials on their DApp
MetaMask:
- $5,000 prize-pool split up amongst 5 teams for building the best DApp on Linea
1inch network:
The project sponsored tracks for the following use cases under the 1st prize, 2nd prize & 3rd prize category
- Utilise the Fusion API
- Create a Yield Optimization Protocol for the 1inch Delegation of Unicorn Power
- Open Track
Optimism:
- Their track was split up into 3 categories for developers building utilising the OP Stack powered by the Optimism mainnet & the Superchain.
ETHGlobal Lisbon Judges, Speakers & Mentors
Consistent with previous ETH Global events, the judge’s panel at the ETH Lisbon was led by the biggest names in the web3 space who decided on the champions that emerged from the Hackathon.
The ETHGlobal Lisbon Finalists
Standing out amongst the 183 project submissions were the top 10. These projects made an impact on the judges and proved that their build was suitable for real-world use as well as making an impact with the available protocol technology at hand
Take a look at them:
1. Credential Corgi: Credential Corgi enables the creation of certification standards, issuance of ZKP-compatible certificates, and a request-proof exchange between 3rd parties and credential holders
2. Dookies: Take full control of your cookies with dookies – anonymous, ZKP-based & incentivized data analytics and tracking for all users. Better ad personalization too
3. buddy: A Tinder-style app on Lens for developers to find hackathon partners, using Sismo Connect to prove knowledge and skills of crypto.
4. CryptoBureau: Unlock under-collateralized lending with Zero-Knowledge Proofs. Say goodbye to excessive collateral and embrace a credit scoring system that goes beyond traditional measures.
5. Pinky Protocol: Peer-to-peer collateral-free NFT lending protocol, leveraging account abstraction. Ownership for the borrower, suppressing liquidation risk for the lender.
6. Web3-gpt4: Web3 GPT-4 simplifies smart contract deployment. Users input Solidity code into the Chat GPT and select an EVM-compatible blockchain, the tool handles the rest.
7. Donation Station: Donation Station saves you from high gas fees in the next Gitcoin round by allowing you to donate on your favorite L2.🛠
8. ChainGPT: Decentralised & verifiable chat AI, backed by the blockchain: a port of Alpaca LLM model leveraging the Cartesi app-specific rollups.
9. op-kompressor: Decompress call data at runtime to save L1 gas while transacting on L2s like Optimism where gas is an expensive resource.
10. LocalPro: The LocalPro infrastructure enables global organisations to collaborate with local independent workers, bringing on-chain verification & incentivisation to local offline work!
Conclusion:
In closing, ETH Global Lisbon 2023 was a huge success and a testament to the vibrant and ever-growing Ethereum developer community. Hackathons with such intense competition always give us a glimpse of the next generation of DApps that will revolutionise the way we will interact with the blockchain in the coming years. I hope this blog has helped you learn more about ETH Global Lisbon 2023 and the exciting world of Ethereum.
