Former crypto mogul Sam Bankman-Fried was ordered to jail on Friday by a federal judge who said he likely tried to influence witnesses before his October trial on multiple charges of financial crimes.
The judge revoked his bond release, saying Bankman-Fried was willing to “risk crossing the line” in his interactions with potential witnesses.
Judge Lewis Kaplan, of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, said: “I’m going to revoke bail. … There is probable cause to believe the defendant has attempted to tamper with witnesses at least twice. … There is a rebuttable presumption that there is no set of conditions that will ensure Bankman-Fried will not be a danger.”
Bankman-Fried, 31, was the former CEO of crypto exchange FTX . He was in court on Friday after the U.S. Department of Justice accused him of violating his bond terms by trying to tamper with multiple witnesses.
