According to India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, there has been an increase in drug smuggling using cryptocurrencies and the darknet. From 2014 to 2022, a total of 3,172 drug smuggling cases were registered, representing a 152% increase from 2006 to 2013, the minister said at a high-level regional meeting on Wednesday. Shah stated in a Hindi Twitter post that all agencies in the country should take a “top to bottom, bottom to top” approach to destroying the entire drug smuggling network. Various Indian government agencies and state police have conducted raids and investigations into crypto-related scams in recent months. Authorities have linked some of the stolen funds to cryptocurrency exchanges like WazirX and Binance.
