Reliance Retail announced on Thursday that it has begun accepting retail payments in the country’s stores using the Indian government’s Digital Rupee. The company plans to eventually accept the retail central bank digital currency (CBDC), popularly known as e-rupee, across all of its 17,000 stores, according to V. Subramaniam, managing director at Reliance Retail, during a public event on Feb. 2. Reliance Retail is collaborating on the CBDC rollout with ICICI Bank Ltd., Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd., and Innoviti Technologies Pvt., a payment processing company.
