El Salvador President Nayib Bukele on September 15 Independence Day live event announced his intentions to run for re-election as the president of the country. Bukele’s current term is set to end in 2024. El Salvador accepted Bitcoin as a legal currency under Bukele’s term in September 2021 making his Presidency quite popular among citizens of the country. Bukele’s announcement comes in spite of El Salvador’s laws that presidents are prohibited from having consecutive terms in office. Bukele reasoned in the live event that like other Democratic nations, El Salvador should also have re-elections giving chances to presidents for consecutive terms.
