According to a court order and a person familiar with the situation, a married New York couple charged with conspiring to launder billions of dollars in bitcoin stolen in the 2016 breach of crypto exchange Bitfinex are likely to plead guilty.
In February 2022, federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C. prosecuted Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan after investigators used software to link stolen digital currency to accounts owned by the two.
Each was charged with conspiring to launder money and defraud the United States.
When Morgan and Lichtenstein were apprehended, the stolen cryptocurrency was worth $4.5 billion.
