Millions of dollars in China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) were distributed across the country during the Lunar New Year holiday in an effort to increase adoption. Around 200 “activities” for the e-CNY were launched across the country during the holiday period, according to a Feb. 6 report in the Global Times, an English-language outlet of the state-run People’s Daily newspaper. These activities were designed to “promote consumption,” marking the first time that the government has done so since recently relaxing COVID-19 restrictions.
