Stefan Berger, a German MEP and a key figure in the EU’s crypto regulation, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he will lead the legislative efforts for a digital euro.
He said that the EU needs its own digital currency to be more independent and to keep up with the digital age.
He also stressed that the digital euro must be as trustworthy as cash.
The digital euro is a CBDC project that the European Central Bank is still considering, but it depends on the technical feasibility and the political support from the Parliament and the Council.
These two bodies will have to agree on laws to protect the data and privacy of the users of the digital euro.
