Bitfinex, a cryptocurrency exchange, reported today that it has recovered $312,219 in cash and 6.9 Bitcoin Cash (worth $1,951 today) lost during a 2016 hack.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, the exchange got the assets from the US Department of Homeland Security.
Bitfinex, situated in the British Virgin Islands, is collaborating with law enforcement to recover assets stolen in a hack years ago and refund them to clients.
Today’s recovery is merely the tip of the iceberg: clients lost a lot of Bitcoin and other assets as hackers stole roughly 120,900 BTC in the attack, which is presently worth $3.6 billion.
The stolen coins were worth $72 million at the time. The Department of Justice announced last year that it had seized the majority of the stolen assets and had arrested two people.
