The European Commission has returned to track to publish laws on a digital euro on June 28 after the contentious topic was earlier pulled from the executive’s agenda, according to the bloc’s senior financial services official on Tuesday.
Commissioner Mairead McGuinness said that she will move forward with a measure to support the central bank’s digital currency, which would address issues such as privacy, distribution, and offline transactions.
According to two sources who spoke to CoinDesk, the item was withdrawn from the agenda after internal deliberations earlier this week, and it was also removed from a draught schedule published by the commission earlier Tuesday.
The CBDC’s plans have aroused concerns that it could lead to governmental spying or usurp the status of banknotes and coins.
