An alleged malicious app posing as the crypto hardware wallet Trezor has been removed from Apple’s App Store, but a quick search reveals that numerous copycat apps are still available.
Rafael Yakobi, Managing Partner of Crypto Lawyers, issued a security notice about Apple’s App Store on June 20. According to Yakobi, the first result in a Google search for “Trezor” was a malware programme designed to steal cryptocurrency.
He advised Apple users that the fraudulent “Trezor Wallet Suite” software would “request your seed phrase, allowing its operators to steal all of your crypto.” “This app has been up for weeks,” Yakobi continued, “and although the total number of victims is unknown, it could easily be in the hundreds or thousands.”
When alerted Apple is quick to remove suspect or fraudulent programmes from its app store, and it claims that apps on its official App Store have been tested and cleared for security considerations.
